Kilnwick Youth Club

The Kilnwick Youth Club is held in the Kilnwick Village Hall.   Its objectives are to continue to unite young people in a safe, social environment (in a rural area in which there are no other nearby facilities to engage them in a positive manner).  The Youth Club has been a great success. It is always well attended (with the vast majority of the village youths attending regularly), and has united youths from our rural area who attend various different schools, so many have met for the first time through the youth club.

We have been very successful in bringing together young people (from 4 to 16 years of age) in productive communal activities which have benefited their wellbeing, boosted their life skills and developed their self-awareness. We hope that their actions will continue also to benefit the local community.

We feel that we have succeeded in providing a stimulating environment appropriate for each age group with activities such as craft and baking sessions, sporting events and supporting the community - assisting vulnerable adults in the local area, planting bedding plants in communal areas, baking for villagers and so forth.  At each stage we have involved the young people themselves in the setting up, the running and the decision making of the Youth Club.  This is in the strong belief that participation and full involvement will bring the greatest opportunities for them to develop into responsible adults.

We have been successful in attracting young people from Kilnwick and neighbouring villages such as Lockington, Lund, Beswick and Watton.  We worked with the East Riding Voluntary Action Service (ERVAS) during the early months of 2014 to become ERCVYS-accredited. The adults who are involved in the rota have been DBS-checked by ERVAS, and we have completed their "Fit for purpose criteria."  In addition to DBS checks, we have in place all of the recommended policies and procedures in the ERVAS Fit for Purpose checklist - including safeguarding training, qualified first aiders, valid insurance and policies for anti-bullying, equal opportunities, health and safety, child protection and accident prevention and reporting.

The club meets fortnightly during term time, on a Friday evening.  The younger group (4 – 8 years of age) meet from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.   The older group (9 – 16 years of age) meet from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.  The cost is £1 per child.  Activities, which are weather dependent, include team sports, crafts, games, film nights and community activities.

Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association

The Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association is a group of ladies of all ages who live in Yorkshire, all with different talents and interests merging into 103 branches throughout the county, from Redcar in the North to Firbeck in the South and Cragg Vale in the West to Hornsea in the East.   Whether your interests are crafts, competitions, holidays or outings, gardening or just fun and friendship, we hope we offer something to suit all tastes.

The Kilnwick Branch meet in the Kilnwick Village Hall once a month for a get together or to be entertained by a speaker or demonstrator.  Our meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm apart from August.  Sometimes we have trips out, lunches and occasionally coffee mornings and open meetings for all the village.

In addition Central Committee organise several events which bring together members from all the Ridings.  These include our AGM in May with a guest speaker, Autumn Meeting in October, which is purely a social event with two speakers, culminating at the end of the year with our County Carol Service in York.

Our members also like to get together on Yorkshire Day to celebrate.  In previous years, we have celebrated at Ryedale Folk Museum Hutton-le-Hole, Harewood House and Burton Agnes Hall, and had a Grande Chic Picnique with fashion show and floral demonstration.  One of our more traditional events is our Annual Craft Competition for YCA members which includes classes for photography, poetry, card making, cross stitch, knitting, patchwork, floristry, cookery and many more.

The East Riding Committee also arrange lunches, afternoon teas, talks, coach trips and holidays. In addition they fund raise for local causes and are involved in local events such as The Driffield Show, The Beverley Festival of Christmas, and The Festival of Trees in Beverley Minster.

We are a friendly bunch who always welcome new members.   For more information, please contact the secretary of the Kilnwick Branch, Linda Appleyard on 01377 275320 or the association's head office:  Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association (within the NFU Building), Agriculture House, 207 Tadcaster Road, York, YO24 1UD.   T: 01904 451 581.  E: yca@centraloffice.wanadoo.co.uk
